Some of our earlier dives occurred when taking a trip to the island of Catalina, off the southern coast of California. Our flight to the island was taken in July of 1996.

Catalina is one of the southern most of California's Channel Islands.

We arrived via my small airplane at the small airstrip on the top of Catalina and thence took a small bus down to the town of Avalon.

The images taken were few and of rather poor quality, but established a yearning to see more of the this under water world and learn more of how we might capture the images before us.

The Casino at Avalon was, and still is, a major attraction. It is not a place of gambling, as the name might imply, but a building with a very ornate theater and dance hall. All the "Big Bands" of the thirties and fourties played there. Departing the island, we circled to take a few departing shots of the town of Avalon. The Casino is to the far left and the harbor filled with small boats and yahts.
