This is the the trip that began our out-of-country diving adventures. It was my first experience using a camera underwater and the first time my wife put her head underwater and attempted to breathe through a regulator. Fortunately, both experiences led us to come back again and learn more of our underwater world.
The island of Cozumel is located off the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, just to the east of Cancun.

Owing to the eastern side of the island being exposed to the open sea, most of the diving takes place on the western side. Though shore diving is accomplished in many places, it is normally best to dive from a boat, as the currents normally run rather briskly. Most of our dives were accomplished as a group, drifting along the various sites with the dive boat following our trail of bubbles.

The trip from Cancun to Cozumel was hot, humid, and bumpy, but fortuntely very short in duration.

Looking back, the images are not particularly stunning; but at the time they were exciting to take and review. These first photographic efforts began with a simple throw-away camera, containing 400 ASA film, housed in a very basic Ikelite Aquashot II housing. The few images that came out reasonably well provided the incentive to continue photographic efforts and seek out more unique subjects to capture on film.

Though most of the underwater photography on this first warm water venture went by way of the trash can, a side venture on land did provide a number of memorable images of the ruins of Cobol and Tulum.

From these rather humble beginnings, a whole new world (literally) opened to us. Sharon become a certified diver, entranced with an incentive to seek out places around the world to explore this underwater world. At a later point, she also developed a very strong desire to photograph this unique environment.
